Holdin’ Back the Years
Stitches of the Current and Keys of the Past
Captain
You ask me why I am chained and scarred
I try to explain the truth without letting you know who I am
You see, for me you only exist in the pictures
We haven’t been in touch in years
And so, I’ve forgotten
Although I once considered you to be my closest friend,
Our lack of contact has affected my memory
You are noble, a story I tell people when I want them to understand that I have not always been this way
Every time I think about you, we actually get further apart
I don’t want you to be trapped with me. You don’t know what I do
And for your sake, I hope it stays that way.
With that, I promise that when you that key close
When you breath
When you smile
When you look at your family
When you try to remember what feels good to you
When you sleep
And when you look in the mirror
You see that the key gives you access and freedom into your mind
It allows you to be in control when you want to run and when it’s time to fight
Do not take this for granted
Those who have lost their keys, are stuck being ambushed and controlled
Held hostage as they steal the pieces that make everyone else whole
Leaving us with nothing and distending us from the support systems
That leaves no other option than to abandon ship
